Sacred Wales are currently offering people the opportunity to vote for their favourite Church or Chapel in Wales. There are over 4,500 churches and chapels in Wales, and the historic Yr Hen Gapel Llwynrhydowen has made it to the short list of 50.  Please give this Chapel your support.

Yr Hen Gapel Llwynrhydowen is a simple stone chapel, which opened in 1733 and retains its Georgian character. It is famed as the mother chapel of Welsh Unitarianism. In 1876, minister Gwilym Marles and his congregation were evicted by the landowner, John Lloyd of Alltyrodyn, citing their ‘radical’ non Tory, Unitarian ideologies as a breach of their lease. After the closure, the popular Gwilym Marles addressed an outdoor congregation of about 3000, with his back to the locked and chained chapel. 'The Lockout' lasted three years, and fuelled national interest and sympathy towards the congregation and minster. Gwilym Marles was a  champion of political social and religious freedom on behalf of the poor and oppressed. The Chapel has been restored by Addoldai Cymru / Welsh Religious Buildings Trust and re-opened by Broadcaster Huw Edwards in July 2015.

Just click on Sacred Wales website, scroll through the pictures to the bottom one (it’s in alphabetical order so naturally Yr Hen Gapel is last) Click on the photo and then on the purple bar below it to vote.
